How to Keep Your Caravan Ready for an Adventure

Although you might put your caravan into storage over the winter months, you'll want to keep it ready for departure. You might fancy a winter escape, or you could just decide to drive it to a part of Australia where the sun is always shining, no matter the season. If you have suitable space on your driveway (without obstructing access for your car and other vehicles), you might simply store your caravan at home. Alternatively, you might take it to a specific, secure caravan storage facility. No matter where you store it, what are some of the ways that you can ensure that your home away from home is always on standby?

The Bodywork

The bodywork of your caravan must be kept in a pristine condition, which is a potential issue when your caravan is temporarily out of action. This is easy enough to achieve with a cover that is both sturdy and breathable. Make sure the caravan is covered, and even though the cover needs to be breathable, you should periodically remove it (as weather permits) in order to allow any accumulated moisture to evaporate.

The Interior

When the cover is removed, even if only for an hour or two, go into the caravan and open the windows, as well as the skylight. This allows the air to circulate and can prevent mildew from forming inside the caravan. You should also take the opportunity to dust the caravan's interior. Although you would have given it a thorough cleaning at the end of the summer season, dust can still gather on interior surfaces.

The Battery

The caravan's battery should remain topped up, allowing for quick deployment of the caravan. Detach the battery unit from the caravan, and invest in a separate charger. During the caravan's period of inactivity, you can keep the battery charged, ready for immediate reconnection at full capacity.

The Wheels

Ensure that tyre pressure is maintained. You might have to occasionally take the caravan to the nearest petrol station in order to properly inflate your tyres during storage, and definitely before you hit the open road. A short trip with the caravan (even if only to the petrol station and back) can be advantageous, since the tyres will be repositioned when the caravan is parked again, meaning that the pressure on the tread is being redistributed.

You won't necessarily know when you'll want to take your caravan out on an adventure, but this isn't going to be an issue when you keep it ready to go.
